Adventure Log: White Rim Rd

SAV Does Utah! 3 Days, 2 Nights, 6 Vans, 1 Truck and a Whole Lot of Adventure

Picture this: March 2024, a convoy of Sprinter Vans (and the token truck camper) ready to take on the wilds of Moab, Utah. Destination? The legendary White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park. This wasn't just any road trip—it was a 100-mile, 3-day adrenaline-fueled (wait, that’s the other van shop) adventure-filled (better), overland escapade.

WHITE RIM ROAD

Let's talk about the White Rim Road. The moniker comes from the white sandstone formations that run the edge of the driving surface along the canyons. Built back in the early 1950s by the Atomic Energy Commission, White Rim was initially aimed at accessing uranium deposits in the region. But soon enough, the mines were abandoned, leaving behind this rugged, picturesque route through Utah’s red-hued landscape, towering monoliths and expansive canyons. Today, the road winds its way around the Island in the Sky area of Canyonlands National Park, flanked by the Green River to the West and the Colorado to the East. Pretty epic, right?

And the adventure? Oh, it was nothing short of spectacular. Sandy stretches, rocky sections, and heart-pumping narrow ledges—our convoy navigated it all, taking the route counterclockwise. From the start at Mineral bottom, to the scenic beauty of Potato Bottom campground, up Murphy’s Hogback to end at Shafer Trail, each twist and turn offered a new challenge, a new view and a new thrill.

But it wasn't just about the road. It was about the camaraderie—the shared laughs, the high-fives at the end of a challenging section, the stories exchanged around the campfire and radio banter. It was about pushing boundaries, putting our vans (and their upgrades) to the test, and coming out on the other side.
